P4 - Object Approach Messaging

While many designers highlight the formal characteristics of the sachplakat style object poster. Their strongest influence in visual communications was the resulting semiotic power between juxtaposed words and images to go beyond the dennotative object and begin to convey nuanced connotative messages.

Object posters originated in the 1920’s to promote products themselves (OBJECT), it soon was hi-jacked by avant garde illustrators of the times and evolved into art deco posters which graphically introduced gradation and sequencing to promote what the products actually did (PROCESS), and later synergized with expressionist and surrealist styles to begin express a product’s idea (CONCEPT) or benefit as a conceptual image.

Today the semiotic power of the original object poster is used everyday in advertisements, film titles, packaging, illustration and every form of contemporary visual communication.

This class assignment is to create a contemporary advertisement promoting your original object poster object (eyeglasses, mugs, pills, skis, running shoes, etc).

The objective of the assignment is to VISUALLY convey a nuanced signified connotative message about a particular company’s product.

You have create license to stylize and re-image your original object, and use any typefaces, textures and graphic treatments you deem appropriate, BUT the the advertisement's dominant elements must include an object/image, a short phrase/word), and a background/color context, along with a company logo (sender/identity) and an optional object/product as the dominant visual elements.

It is suggested that you create a project brief, conduct additional visual research, and create concepts roughs for the project to help develop a successful design.

Post your project progress on your blog for review by the beginning of class Tuesday, November 7th.

Your advertisement concept roughs turned out great. For the most part, they just needed a little editing down to their semiotic essence, along with a few visual tweaks—resizing some elements and re-positioning other to create stronger message hierarchy and syntax.

The next phase of this project is to create a campaign of three final advertisements promoting your object.

The final advertisements will be due posted on your blog, as well as printed and hung on the crit wall, by the beginning of class, Thursday, November 9th
